A 19-year-old handyman was on Wednesday sentenced to four years imprisonment for breaking into a woman’s home and carting away $6.8M worth of gold jewellery.

Vicky Ganga of Jetty Squatting Area, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan and the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

He admitted to breaking into the Lodge, Georgetown house between January 25 and March 3, 2023, and stealing a quantity of gold jewellery along with $100,000 in cash.

The court heard that Ganga was employed as a handyman at the woman’s home; he was arrested on March 19 after a Police report was made.

In court, Ganga said that he returned all of the items to the Police at the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station.

However, the court prosecutor said that only a gold chain was handed over to the ranks and it’s currently lodged at the East La Penitence Police Station.

The Chief Magistrate, after considering the nature and prevalence of the crime, sentenced Ganga to four years imprisonment.
