Pedestrian succumbs hours after struck down on Canje Bridge

A 61-year-old security guard who was attached to the New Amsterdam Technical Institute has succumbed to injuries he sustained after being struck down on the Canje bridge.

Dead is Glenn McLeod of 913 New Area, East Canefield, East Canje Berbice. He was pushing his bicycle along the bridge when he was struck down.

Police said that the accident took place at approximately 22:30 hrs on Monday, March 27 2023. Motor car PWW 511, driven by Chaitram Persaud, 25, of Lot 67 Belmonte, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara was heading west when he struck down McLeod.

News Room was informed that Persaud was speeding when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into McLeod. As a result of the impact, McLeod was flung into the air before falling on the surface and the car Persaud was driving smashed into the southern rail of the bridge.

McLeod, Persaud and the injured passenger were rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital nearby.

McLeod was admitted with a fractured left foot and other injuries while the driver and the passenger of the car were treated for minor injuries.

The pedestrian, however, succumbed this morning to his injuries.

Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus as confirmed that the driver is in police custody.

It was also disclosed that the driver was under the influence of alcohol when the accident took place and two blood alcohol level tests were done. Those tests revealed results of .54 and .49 respectively.
