Ranks of the Police Force on Friday arrested a 52-year-old resident of ‘C’ Field squatting area, Sophia, with some 16,646 grammes (36.6 lbs) of marijuana at the New Amsterdam Ferry Stelling in Berbice.

His accomplice jumped into the Berbice River and escaped, Police Headquarters said.

According to the Police report, at around 06:35 hrs, a rank who was at the marine base observed two men carrying two multi-coloured bags in their hands and acting suspiciously as they entered a passenger boat at the stelling.

As a result, the rank approached the men and identified himself as a Police Officer and told them of his suspicion.

According to the Police, the rank searched one of the bags, and he found four bulky parcels containing a quantity of seeds, leaves and stems suspected to be cannabis.

He immediately told them of the offence and one of the suspects replied, “Officer, we can work out something.”

A search was also conducted in the other bag, and seven bulky parcels suspected to be cannabis were also found.

The Police rank attempted to arrest the suspects when one of them jumped into the river.

    The investigation is ongoing.
