Greater independence promised as 1,500 persons get East Coast house lots
About 1,500 persons on Tuesday received land allocations at Lusignan and Good Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD), from the Ministry of Housing and Water as the government inches towards delivering 50,000 house lots by 2025.
The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Andre Ally, told Tuesday’s gathering at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, Liliendaal, Georgetown that about 1,100 of the house lots up for distribution are for low and moderate income persons.
Another 270 house lots are for middle income individuals while the remaining house lots are for high income earners.
Andrea Nurse, a 26-year-old Police Officer, was one of the allottees who will soon construct her house at Good Hope.
“I’ve been back and forth a lot, calling to find out about my lot…but I got a call last week and it was such an exciting thing at my age, to own my own home.
“It is really a privilege that I can call something mine and I would be very grateful,” Nurse told the News Room.
Meanwhile, 30-year-old Gabriel Gilkes told the News Room that he applied for a house lot since 2013 and is happy that he finally clinched an allocation.
The allocation, he said, is all the more meaningful since he is a person with a disability and believes that owning his own home promises him greater independence.
“For me, this is the beginning of financial independence so I’m just happy to get it sorted out.
“…I just hope that persons with disabilities can see me and that I procured a lot, and they can see that they can do this too,” Gilkes said.
With the allocation of these new East Coast Demerara house lots, subject Minister Collin Croal said a total of 22,500 lots would have been distributed by the government since taking office in 2020.
Of that total, 5,900 house lots were distributed along the East Coast Demerara.
Croal also told the gathering that while more lots are being distributed, the government is executing more than $50 billion in much-needed infrastructural development across the country. Those works will pave the way for new housing schemes.
