A 34-year-old woman is currently hospitalised in a critical condition at the New Amsterdam Hospital after she was chopped multiple times by her boyfriend before sunrise on Wednesday; he had earlier threatened to put her to the “ground.”

Hospitalised is Sandy Persaud called “Baby” of No.55 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. Her boyfriend, a barber, is currently on the run. He has been identified as Sasarina Sankar, also of No.55 Village.

Police said they received an anonymous call about the attack at about 05:00 hrs on Wednesday (April 5, 2023), with the caller saying the woman was a patient at the Skeldon Hospital. Police said they managed to speak with the victim and she implicated Sankar as her attacker. He dealt her chops to her right hand, left foot, finger, and about her body. Because of the seriousness of her injuries, she was transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital where she was admitted.

Parbhattie Dyal, 55, aunt of the injured woman, told reporters that she heard her niece screaming sometime around 05:00 hrs this morning at her home and at that point she began screaming for help.

“By the time I run go she already get chop up and deh in the house, if you see blood on the bed…,” Dyal said.

According to the woman, the man was angered that Persaud had made arrangements to go on vacation overseas; that resulted in an argument and Sankar took the cutlass and chopped her about her body.

Dyal said only a week ago, Sankar approached her niece with a knife while she was paying an internet bill at No.57 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. Persaud had relayed to her that Sankar (attacker) pulled a knife on her while in public.

“He pull the knife on her and she push him and he fall down and she phone fall down from the hand and he grab the phone. The car driver run out with a long bar and run he so he run and get away,” Dyal revealed.

Meanwhile, in a voice note purportedly sent by Sankar to Persaud prior to her attack he could be heard threatening the woman.

“You go learn sense with me, me na care; what comes around, goes around…you na want come a house with me you go learn sense, me go put yuh a ground, me go put you flat flat ah ground, you got to look shame and you got to deh one place, nobody must see you or want you. Tomorrow you go see what me go do with you…” the voice note said.

News Room understands that Persaud endured years of abuse at the hands of her boyfriend and that he had also attacked her in last month, causing her to receive injuries. She had moved out to stay with her cousin but reportedly returned to Berbice, to her home only last week.

The injured woman is a mother of two teenagers.

Police are continuing their search for Sankar.
