Sixty-nine-year-old Kissoondai Sewratan, the woman who was struck down by a minibus on Tuesday night, had just paid for a house lot she secured earlier in the day and was returning home to celebrate her son’s birthday when tragedy struck.

In an interview with the News Room on Wednesday, the dead woman’s son, Avinash Sewratan, said she left home early morning to attend the housing drive that was held at the Arthur Chung Convention Center at Liliendaal, Georgetown. Tuesday also happened to be Avinash’s birthday.

Every year, he said it was customary for his mother to hug and kiss him and wish him happy birthday in the morning. But since she had to leave early, she didn’t get to do that this year. Instead, she gave him a call during the day once she was at the conference centre.

She called again, around 14:30 hrs, to make arrangements for the family to start dinner since she was still waiting at the conference centre and didn’t think she was going to make it home in time to do dinner.

Avinash said he had just returned home from work when he received the news that his mother was involved in an accident.

Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred around 18:20hrs on the Rupert Craig Highway, in the vicinity of the Movie Towne mall. He was told the bus was undertaking and struck his mother.

The driver of the minibus, BAD 1832, who has been identified as Shivraj Persaud, 39, a businessman of Seaforth Street, Campbellville, Georgetown is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.

According to the Police, Persaud claimed that he was proceeding east along the northern lane of the northern carriageway of the road and while in the vicinity of Movie Towne, Sewratan ran across the road and into the path of his vehicle.

As a result, Sewratan sustained injuries about her body and fell onto the roadway. She was picked up and taken to the Georgetown Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The News Room learnt that Persaud’s mother passed away about a month ago.

The buses spend 50% of their time speeding in the inside of the road…..they think the shoulder is their lane and they do not go slow in it.

I hope that there is witnesses and or CCTV footage to show the truth.
