Police are investigating the murder of a 26-year-old fisherman who was allegedly beaten and stabbed to death by a group of men at Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara (WCD) on Monday.
Dead is Monoff Azeem, called ‘Goat man’ of Lot 49 Anna Catherina, WCD.
The News Room understands that the incident occurred around 08:00 hrs while Azeem was in the verandah of his house.
Police Commander of Region Three, Mahendra Sewnarine told the News Room that detectives are currently at the scene.
According to Sewnarine, preliminary investigation revealed that Azeem was allegedly stabbed over an argument about a fishing seine that ensued on Sunday.
The dead man’s sister Bibi Shameeza Azeem, however, told the News Room that her brother was not the intended target of the attack but his brother-in-law was.
In fact, she said Azeem was not on the fishing boat on Sunday when the argument ensued.
“Eight guys come up to him and when he turn around they start to beat him and cuff him and then they take a knife and they stab he through and through he body.
“One stab kill my brother…They stab he, you could actually see through and through him,” the grieving woman said.
She added, “They stab wrong person… My brother was the wrong victim…The brother-in-law seh is he is the one who they come fah.
“My brother didn’t work on the boat yesterday that is why them seh they get wrong person.”
Shameeza said the family is pleading for justice.
“We asking fah justice. We need justice fah this…We need help,” she told the News Room.
Three persons were arrested and are assisting the police with their investigations.
My sympathy goes out to the Azeem family on the loss of their loved one The sad thing about it all is that he was innocently murdered for a crime he did not commit. It is just a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. May justice be served. I do hope that all of the perpetrators would be arrested and duly dealt with. May his soul rest in peace.
