An 18-year-old University of Guyana (UG) student succumbed last Friday, days after he was allegedly assaulted and stabbed by masked bandits while liming at an East Coast Demerara (ECD) bar.

Dead is Anil Jerry called “Anand” of Sixth Street, Cumming’s Lodge, also on the ECD.

The News Room understands that the incident unfolded around 21:00 hrs on April 2, 2023 while Jerry was at a Success Railway Embankment, ECD bar with three friends.

Up to Tuesday, there has been no official word from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) about the incident.

However, the teenager’s sister, Alexandra Jerry, told the News Room in an interview that she understands that one of her brother friends was allegedly attacked by masked men and when her brother tried to intervene he was beaten and stabbed.

“One of the female friends said they were sitting down for like 10 minutes when they realise these men were circling around in the area,” Alexandra said.

“After a while, like couple minutes later, they (men) came back with mask.

“So the male friend went sitting down on one table, he had his phone outside like on the table….One of the bandits was going towards him.

“They knock him out; whilst he was on the ground now, my brother got up to intervene, then the other bandit knock him on his head with a gun and probably when he fall down they stab him in the neck…He went bleeding, bleeding,” she explained.

According to Alexandra other persons were present at the bat at the time but they couldn’t take any action since they were reportedly held at gunpoint by the bandits.

“My brother was beat up badly. They beat him, they stab him, they knock him on his head with the gun,” Alexandra said.

Alexandra said she is unsure what might have been the motive of the attack since the men did not take any of her brother’s belongings.

“They didn’t took anything from him. This is where we were like a little skeptical. He got his phone…We want to know what happen to this child really,” Alexandra told the News Room.

She further noted that her brother was only taken to the hospital about three hours after the incident.

Whilst hospitalised, she said Anil was on a life support machine even after emergency surgery.

“They said that he was brain dead because the main artery of the neck was burst…Apparently the blood wasn’t getting to the brain,” Alexandra said.

The News Room understands that no arrest has been made as yet in the matter.

Anil, who was from Region Seven, was a first-year student pursuing geography on a scholarship.

His died two days before celebrating his 18th birthday.
