Suriname’s Fly All Ways has been approved to fly directly from Guyana to Canada and flights should have started already, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill said.
The minister said this on Thursday, the day after President Dr Irfaan Ali’s announced that Sky Cana would be flying the Guyana- Canada route.
Edghill said Fly All Ways was given the clearance to fly directly from Guyana to Canada before Sky Cana.
“I would’ve liked them to start already,” Edghill said.
He, however, noted that the airline has not engaged him on why those flights have not yet commenced.
Fly All Ways was approved to fly from Georgetown, Guyana, in 2021. According to its website, flights out of Guyana go to Barbados, Cuba, Jamaica and Suriname.
Canada is not yet listed as one of its destinations.
Meanwhile, offering additional details on the Dominican Republic’s Sky Cana flights to Canada, Edghill said the flight will stop first in Punta Cana (a town in the Dominican Republic) before proceeding to Canada.
Sky Cana flights will start from June 1; it will also fly to Houston, Texas.
Sky Cana is a carrier based at Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo (SDQ). It has a fleet of ten aircraft, including two Airbus A330s, three Airbus A321s, four Airbus A320s, and one cargo turboprop. In November, Sky Cana added two Airbus A320-200s to its fleet.
Aside from these flights from Guyana to Canada, talks on visa-free travel have been ongoing for some time.
Last November, Canadian High Commissioner Mark Berman said the Governments of Guyana and Canada are discussing this.
According to a release from the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI), the High Commissioner assured GCCI’s new President Kester Hutson, and Senior Vice President Richard Rambarran that discussions were underway to remove visa restrictions altogether in the future.
