    Grove woman charged for threatening President Ali, exciting hostility

    Zalena Ali, a 59-year-old housewife of Golden Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was on Thursday charged with threatening language and attempt to excite hostility or ill-will.

    Her threats were made against Guyana’s President Dr. Irfaan Ali.

    Ali, called Kim Ali, was arrested on Sunday. She appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce, at the Diamond/Golden Grove Magistrate’s Court #1, on Thursday.

    There, two charges were read to her.

    The first charge was made under the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act for the use of threatening language against President Ali.

    The second charge, made under the Racial Hostility Act, was for her attempt to excite hostility or ll-will on citizen, Raynard Sobers.

    Ali pleaded not guilty to the first charge for the offence against President Ali was fined $75,000. She, however, pleaded guilty to the second charge and was placed on $25 000 bail.

    The matter was adjourned to May 5, 2023.
