Welder, 24, found not guilty of raping girl, 11

A 24-year-old welder on Thursday walked out of the Demerara High Court a free man after a 12-member jury found him not guilty of raping an 11-year-old girl.

Triston Telford was on trial before Justice Navindra Singh at the Demerara High Court for the offense of rape of a child under the age of 16.

He had denied the indictments, which alleged that during the month of December 2018, he raped the child at his Georgetown house.

The State was represented by prosecutor Nafeeza Baig, while Telford was represented by George Thomas.

Following the judge’s summation of the case on Thursday, the 12-member jury retired to deliberate and returned some hours after with the verdict, finding Telford not guilty.
