Nomination Day activities were off to a competitive start on Monday in Linden, Region 10 as the governing People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) asserted once again its intention to gain more political support in the municipality that has historically been controlled by the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) opposition.
A large contingent of PPP/C supporters, clad in red, marched the street of Linden in a massive show of support for the party as they made their way to the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) registration office.
Once at the GECOM office, they came face to face with a small group of APNU supporters and chants were exchanged as persons from the two sides hugged.
The big political figures from the two sides were direct in their message.
Despite the small showing at the Nomination Day activities, the APNU Coalition, of which the PNC/R is the main of four political parties, maintained confidence that the party will hold on to its political domination in Linden and the other Neighbourhood Democratic Councils in Region 10.
The PPP/C currently has one seat on the Town Council of Linden.
According to Opposition Parliamentarian and Linden resident, Jermain Figueira, the APNU’s list of candidates presents a mix of senior and young, intelligent representatives.
“The noise in the market don’t determine the sale. Linden will remain a bedrock of support for the PNC… that wouldn’t change,” Figueira told the News Room.
He said in the weeks leading up to the June 12 polls, the party will continue its work at the community level but acknowledged that there were lapses in the past which have cost the party some of its support.
“In some areas where there were lapses, we listened to the people and made some changes to the representatives and provided the people with persons who they wanted.
“But we are not intimidated. We will continue to win Linden unanimously,” the Opposition MP said.
Public Works Minister Juan Edghill led the PPP contingent through the streets of Linden.
“The numbers tell the story today and will tell the story on June 12,” Edghill said.
He told the New Room that no one was forced to be a part of the procession to GECOM’s Registration Office and insisted that the plan is to take over Linden and other APNU-controlled municipalities in the country.
“No place in Guyana the PNC has a transport… these are supporters, backers, candidates, real people who want to support PPP/C,” Edghill said of the massive crowd of people following him.
He said the showing is because of the ground work the PPP/C has been doing in the region along with the policies and programmes for the development of All of Region 10.
“We are confident that we will gain ground but we will not take anything for granted. Our campaign will be door to door we will give everyone an opportunity,” the Public Works Minister added.
Among the PPP/C candidates were several prominent Linden residents who openly supported the APNU in the past.
