Herstelling arson: Elderly couple left homeless
The Guyana Fire Service has determined that someone maliciously set fire to a house at Third Street, Herstelling, East Bank Demerara Monday night, rendering an elderly couple homeless.
The building was owned by 64-year-old Maharanie Mohan and 61-year-old Ramesh Pritipaul.
According to a release from the Guyana Fire Service, the fire was reported at about 19:00 hrs. Two water tenders, a water bowser and a Land Rover were dispatched to the location from the West Ruimveldt, Georgetown and Diamond, East Bank Demerara fire stations.
The building was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene. Eventually, the building and its contents were destroyed leaving Mohan and Pritipaul homeless.
Two nearby houses were also damaged by the fire.
