Essequibo pump attendant Nankishore Persaud was sentenced to life imprisonment on Tuesday for beating and killing his friend during an argument three years ago.

Justice Sandil Kissoon, while handing down the sentence at the Suddie High Court, ordered that Persaud serve a maximum of 25 years before being eligible for parole.

Persaud was on trial for the capital offence of murder, which alleged that on February 26, 2020, at Zorg, Essequibo Coast, he murdered Arvin Toolsie Mayhilall.

However, the jury found Persaud not guilty of the capital offence, but guilty of the lesser count of manslaughter.

According to reports, after Mayhilall’s death, his relatives were told that he had fallen from a bench while visiting Persaud and broke his neck.

However, Mayhilall’s mother, Jaiwantie Mayhilall, maintained that her son was murdered, prompting an investigation.

It was reported that the two friends had an altercation during which Mayhilall was attacked and killed by Persaud. A Post Mortem Examination (PME) report revealed that Mayhilall died as a result of trauma to his head and a fractured spine.
