Porter dies, speeding driver survives with bruises following Bartica accident

A lorry driver was injured and his colleague died following an accident on the 15KM Potaro Road in Bartica, Region Seven on Monday.

The News Room understands that 50-year-old Bramroop Raganauth of South/East Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara was driving a motor lorry (GAC 4427.)

Kurt Ferreira, a 45-year-old porter of Soesdyke/Linden Highway was a passenger in the vehicle.

A statement from Police Headquarters noted that the lorry was proceeding along the stretch of road at Potaro, allegedly at a fast rate.

While descending a hill, the driver lost control and the lorry toppled.

Raganauth and Ferreira received injuries on their bodies.

They were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where Raganauth was seen and examined by a doctor; he suffered abrasions on his body and was admitted to the Male Surgical Ward. His condition is regarded as stable.

Ferreira was pronounced dead. The matter was reported to the Police on Tuesday at about 16:45 hrs. Investigations are ongoing.
