An accident on the Bee Hive Public Road, East Coast Demerara on Wednesday night claimed the life of Byron Lewis, a 78-year-old pensioner of Kwakwani Village, Region 10.

The News Room understands that Lewis once served as the Vice Chairman of Region 10.

Police Headquarters reported that the accident occurred around 20:00 hrs and at the time, Lewis was the driver of motor car, PPP 5769, which was being towed by another car driven by Ronis Lewis, a mechanic.

Ronis told the Police that he and Byron were proceeding east when he noticed another car (PKK 3124) in the opposite direction approaching him at a fast rate.

This car was being driven by Beesham Persaud, a 33-year-old carpenter of Hope Lowlands, ECD. Ronis claimed that Persaud overtook another vehicle and ended up in his path.

The mechanic said he tried to avoid a collision by pulling further north of the road but Persaud collided with the front portion of his car. As a result, Byron and Persaud both sustained injuries and were taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital by public-spirited citizens where Byron was pronounced dead.

Persaud was treated for minor injuries, the Police said.

The cars are lodged at the Cove and John Police Station to be examined by a Licensing and Certifying Officer. Persaud was placed in police custody and is assisting with the investigation.
