Guyana’s Under-20 Lady Jags narrowly missed out on advancing to the next round of qualification for the FIFA Women’s Under-20 World Cup, despite playing unbeaten in the Concacaf Qualifiers.

The Guyanese drew nil-all with the Dominican Republic in their final Group C game on Wednesday at the Estadio Felix Sanchez in Santo Domingo, a result which meant both sides ended on seven points each.

However, the Dominican Republic advanced to the next round on the basis of having a better goal-difference than Guyana.

While both teams did not concede a goal in three matches, the Dominican Republic scored 18, two more than Guyana.

The first-half saw chances for both sides, but the two goalkeepers proved to be outstanding, as Guyana’s Nya-Grace Young and Dominican Republic’s Paloma Pena each made some impressive saves in the first 45 minutes.

The Dominican Republic had the bulk of chances in the second half, but Young would not be beaten.

Coming into the final game, Guyana had defeated Suriname 6-0 and Dominica 10-0, while the Dominican Republic topped Suriname 3-0 and Dominica 15-0.
