A new four-lane highway from Ogle, East Coast of Demerara (ECD) to Eccles, East Bank Demerara (EBD) is being built but that road could eventually connect the East Bank to Silica City, Guyana’s second city, on the Soesdyke/ Linden Highway.

This was revealed by Aditya Parakh, a Director of Ashoka Buildcon, the Indian company constructing the road from Ogle to Eccles.

Parakh provided the visiting Indian Minister of External Affairs, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar with an update on the major US$106 million project in Guyana.

And during his presentation, Parakh said the road network will eventually connect the East Coast and East Bank corridors but it may eventually be extended to the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) at Timehri and Silica City.

When the US$106.4 million contract for the project was inked last June, it was reported that lands aback Ogle will be made available for development when the road is completed. Currently, those lands are largely unoccupied.

This contract, which signalled the official commencement of the project, came about eight years after Guyana received a funding commitment from India.

When completed in 2024, the new highway will accommodate four-lane traffic that stretches 7.7 kilometres. The road will provide a direct link between the East Coast and East Band Demerara corridor, thereby reducing traffic congestion in and around Georgetown. (Vishani Ragobeer)
