Woman dies in Vergenoegen hit and run accident

Selena Sooklall, a 45-year-old resident of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara) died following a hit and run accident on Saturday night.

Police Headquarters reported that Sooklall, a pedestrian, was kneeling on the southern carriageway of the Vergenoegen public road at about 22:55 hrs Saturday.

A driver, Samantha Manohar, a 26-year-old of Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara, was driving her car (#PKK 6534) when she saw the woman in her path.

Before Manohar could have completely stop her vehicle, a red pick-up that was proceeding in the same direction overtook her vehicle and collided with the pedestrian, dragging her about 50 feet from the point of impact.

The woman alleged that the pick-up then stopped a few feet away from the pedestrian but the driver drove away in a western direction.

As a result of the collision, the pedestrian received injuries to her head and body.

Sooklall’s motionless body was taken to Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The body was subsequently taken to the Ezekiel Funeral Parlour.

Meanwhile, Police said investigators observed several CCTV cameras in the area and will review the available footage. Investigations are ongoing.
