Students at the Guyana Technical Institute (GTI) will now benefit from in-field skills training through a partnership with Worksite Guyana.

The recently inked Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) allows for students to be taken into the field by the construction and tradesman marketing company to assist contractors while honing their skills.

This will also provide much-needed job opportunities for the students. The company, co-founded by former boxer, Simeon Hardy is a marketplace for persons in the building and construction field.

During an interview with the News Room on Monday, Hardy said in this technology-focused era, online marketing has proven to be significantly better for people to hire equipped and skilled workers.

“We decided to partner with GTI and this is in order to help the students with getting a little practice in the fields.

“This way, they can get out there on an internship programme and get out there and get some practice and get some sort of incentive,” Hardy said.

He explained that second-year students, who are studying and need the experience, are being targeted for this purpose.

“With this, it will allow them to build relationships and get experience on the construction sites.

“They will know what they need to do,” he added.

The idea is that the school will be contacted when there is a need for extra hands at sites. Currently, Worksite Guyana uploads skilled persons with information on their background for the public to access and this provides possible employers with the necessary information to hire these persons.

Worksite Guyana promotes plumbers, construction workers, and other tradesmen. This marketplace finds independent and competent workers; it also does project management.

Hardy said he decided to bring his idea to Guyana since it is proving to be useful in the United States of America. Hardy has an app, The Coach Desk, which is used to connect trainers with prospective customers.
