Colonel Omar Khan is slated to take over command of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Friday from the current Chief of Staff, Brigadier Godfrey Bess.

Colonel Khan, 51, is the current head of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA); he has been serving in the position since 2020.

President Dr. Irfaan Ali was asked on Wednesday whether Colonel Khan will head both NISA and the GDF.

“You don’t have to worry about that.

“When Mr. Khan gets his new responsibilities, of course, you will have other persons taking up that responsibility,” the Head of State told the media at the Office of the President.

Last year, when Brigadier Godfrey Bess and Colonel Julius Skeete attended training sessions in the United States of America (USA), Colonel Omar acted as the GDF’s Chief of Staff.

Aside from these leadership roles, he has been serving in the military for a number of years.

When contacted by the News Room, Colonel Khan said, he is ready to serve.

“I am truly honoured to render military service to our beautiful country. I have been doing this for over three decades. The appointment of Chief of Staff will allow me to continue this service.”
