For the ninth year, the New Building Society (NBS) has teamed up with the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) to host a Second Division 40-over tournament in the city.

The competition, which features 18 teams, has already commenced, but the official launch was held on Wednesday at NBS Head Office on North Road and Avenue of the Republic.

Chairman Dr. Nanda Kishore Gopaul highlighted that NBS has been pleased with the work of the GCA in executing the tournament over the years.

He added that it has provided a platform for many young players who have gone on to represent Guyana and the West Indies.

Dr. Gopaul envisioned they could host the champion teams from the other counties for one grand final in the future.

Expressing gratitude for the immense support over the years was GCA’s First Vice-President, Roger Harper.

He reflected that the competition has led players up the cricketing ladder, noting that Guyana’s latest Test player, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, had his elementary years in the tournament.

Harper indicated that teams are eager to dethrone defending champions Georgetown Cricket Club, who have won the tournament multiple times. Weather permitting, the hope is to conclude the tournament before year-end.
