The revised Liza Field Development Plan (FDP) that was pursued so that Guyana would be able to harness natural gas produced offshore to fire a power plant at Wales, West Bank Demerara (WBD), has been completed.

This was announced by Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday during a People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) press conference held at the party’s headquarters, Freedom House.

“The Field Development Plan for Liza has been completed and that is the plan that will allow for the extension for at least 20 years for that project, so that you will have gas supply for at least 20 years,” Jagdeo said.

Liza I is the first development in the lucrative Stabroek Block offshore Guyana. Oil production started here in 2019.

This area is known to have substantial natural gas reserves too and Guyana’s government has been keen on harnessing the gas and converting into energy that is about half the price most Guyanese consumers pay currently.

Other products, such as cooking gas, are expected to be produced at the natural gas facility.

So a review of the FDP was necessary to allow for the use of natural gas.

The Gas-to-Energy project at Wales will feature an integrated natural gas liquid plant and a 300-megawatt power plant. It is expected to come onstream in 2024.

US-based integrated energy solutions group – LINDSAYCA – in partnership with a local firm – CH4 Group- is executing the engineering, procurement and construction of the project.
