Get to know new Army Chief Brigadier Omar Khan

Brigadier Omar Khan will today begin serving as the 11th Chief of Staff of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF).

Brigadier Omar Khan is a career military officer of the Guyana Defence Force with over 30 years of service under his belt.

He received his Instrument of Commission in 1992 from then President and Commander-in-Chief Desmond Hoyte.

Over the years, Brigadier Khan served in various specialties across the Defence Force including the infantry, training, intelligence and maritime units.

He acquired considerable staff and command exposures culminating with the appointment of Commander of an Infantry Battalion in 2017 on approval of the then President and Commander-in-Chief, David Granger.

In August 2020, Brigadier Khan was appointed Director of the National Intelligence and Security Agency by President and Commander-in-Chief Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali. He held this same appointment previously from 2010 to 2016, a period that witnessed three Presidents – Dr Bharrat Jagdeo, Donald Ramotar and David Granger.

During his career, Brigadier Khan completed several military courses including the Senior Command and Staff Course of the Guyana Defence Force and the one-year Advanced Command and Staff Course at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom (2016-2017) where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Strategic Defence Studies.

Brigadier Khan is the holder of a Master’s Degree from the University of Liverpool in International Management.

He is the 2005 Valedictorian of the University of Guyana and also the recipient of the President’s Medal from the said University.

Brigadier Khan is also the recipient of several military awards including the Military Service Medal.

He is married and has three children.
