Vice President, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo says the government is actively working to fix salary anomalies that exist in the teaching profession as has been done for health workers across the country.

Dr. Jagdeo, speaking at a party press conference on Thursday, acknowledged that there are some existing salary issues where teachers with the same qualifications and/or experience may be receiving different salaries as was the case in the health sector before recent adjustments were made.

In this regard, he said the government will fix the “anomalies that were there for a while.”

“… What we are thinking about is we want our teachers to be trained and there should be a salary gradation based on years of service and qualifications,” Jagdeo said.

Already, there have been salary adjustments (increases) for healthcare workers and for members of the disciplined services.

Those came after President Dr. Irfaan Ali promised salary adjustments for several categories of public servants, including teachers. He has maintained that adjustments for teachers will come at an “appropriate time.”

Jagdeo, however, declined to provide a timeframe indicating when the government might conclude its work on teachers’ salary adjustments.

“The agenda is heavy but it is something that is actively engaging the agenda of the government,” he said.
