Assistance coming for over 500 Pomeroon farmers

Some 550 farmers in the Pomeroon River will be receiving elevated beds and two mini excavators will arrive in the next few days to provide much-needed assistance.

This announcement was made on Thursday by President Dr Irfaan Ali during a meeting with residents and farmers in the village of Marlborough.

In his third visit to this village since assuming office in August 2020, the Head of State said he wanted to listen to any concerns or issues the residents may have.

The residents were told that over $2 billion have been invested in developing agriculture in the region since the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) took office.

And according to the President, the government is also actively seeking out big investors to expand the coconut and coffee farms in the region.

Recognizing the importance of small farmers, the President stated that the government would explore ways to help these farmers cultivate high-value crops that could provide a consistent income. The government is also working on improving sporting facilities in the Pomeroon River.

According to President Ali, his vision is for Guyana to become a major food-producing country, with the Pomeroon playing a vital role in this goal. He pledged to focus on rebuilding the citrus industry and ensuring that young farmers have the opportunity to thrive.

The President and his team listened attentively to the concerns of the people of the Pomeroon River and promised to address the issues in a timely manner. During the visit, residents also raised concerns about the need for a pavilion and children’s play park for St. John’s Primary and called for an increase in teacher salaries due to the high cost of living in the region.

The President assured the people of the Pomeroon that he would inform the First Lady about the need for the pavilion and play park project.He emphasised that producing food for the people is one of the greatest blessings and urged everyone to work together towards a prosperous future.
