Women’s Super50 Cup: First points for Guyana after thrilling win over Leeward Islands

Guyana women got their first points in the ongoing Regional Super50 with a thrilling one-run win over the Leeward Islands in St. Kitts and Nevis on Friday.

Chasing 168 for victory, Leeward Islands came agonisingly close to victory but fell short by just one run in a match filled with outstanding performances from both sides that kept spectators on the edge of their seats until the very end.

After winning the toss, the Leeward Islands chose to field, looking to capitalize on early wickets. The Guyana Women’s team batted steadily, determined to post a competitive total of 167-9.

Shabika Gajnabi led the batting charge with an impressive knock of 49 runs while Kaysia Schults contributed with a valuable 25.

The Leeward Islands bowlers put up a spirited performance, led by Tonya Martin, who finished with figures of 4-36.

Amanda Edwards then played a sensational innings, scoring 74 runs with the help of 11 boundaries to keep the Leeward Islands in contention for victory and Davanna Claxton provided valuable support with a knock of 23.

However, Guyana fought back fiercely led by Gajnabi, displaying her all-around abilities.

She picked up 2-31 but Shenta Grimmond was the standout bowler, claiming 3-26 and Plaffiana Millington got 2-26 to restrict the hosts to 166-9 from their full allotment of overs.

In round four,  Guyana faces Jamaica and the Leeward Islands will take on Trinidad and Tobago while Barbados and Winward Islands will clash.
