Gold miner stabbed to death by drinking buddy

A 24-year-old gold miner was allegedly stabbed to death by his drinking partner during an argument on Sunday at Puruni River, Region Seven.

Dead is Raynold John of Moruca Village, North West District.

The incident occurred around 00:30hrs at ‘Chiney Creek’ Backdam, Puruni River.

The suspect, who is a 23-year-old gold miner, was arrested and has since provided the police with a confession detailing what transpired.

Reports are that John and the suspect are known to each other as they worked together in the same field for two different dredge owners.

Police Headquarters on Monday said investigations revealed that at about 17:30hrs on Saturday, John left his camp and went to another camp nearby.

There he began drinking with a group of friends, including the suspect.

While drinking, Police said an argument ensued between John and the suspect.

As a result, John left and went back to his camp.

According to the Police, the suspect followed John, pulled out a knife from his pants waist and stabbed the victim to his chest.

John collapsed and the Police were summoned.

Checks were made for the suspect, who was arrested at another camp some distance away.

Investigators also recovered the suspected murder weapon on a bench in the camp.

John’s body was then escorted to Bartica Regional Hospital.

According to the Police, the suspect was taken to Bartica police station where he was cautioned and admitted to committing the crime.

“A video interview was also done in which he (suspect) again detailed what happened,” Police said.

Investigations are ongoing.
