Man, 57, dies in Mon Repos accident

Ralph DeCastro, a 57-year-old man, was fatally struck down on Saturday night after he reportedly walked across the Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD) public road and into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

The News Room was reliably informed that the accident occurred around 19:30 hrs.

DeCastro was struck by motorcar, PAD 7001, which was heading east along the northern drive lane of the public road.

The driver of the car, who has been identified as a 41-year-old woman of Church Street, Enmore, ECD, is presently in Police custody assisting with the investigation.

The driver told the Police that DeCastro walked suddenly across the road and into the path of her vehicle; she said she applied brakes but the left side front of the car still collided with DeCastro.

He was picked up in an unconscious state by public spirits citizens and taken to Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

An eyewitness told the News Room that DeCastro was trying to cross the road when tragedy struck.

“He try to cross the road…a car, go with a speed, hit he and he go up in the air and fall down….A vehicle come with a full speed and run he over and he dead right on the spot,” the woman related.

The car was lodged to be examined by a licensing and certifying officer.
