Friendship man, 23, dies in accident at Hill Foot

A 23-year-old man died on Monday after the car he was driving collided with a motor lorry at Hill Foot along the Soesdyke/ Linden Highway.

Dead is Joel Alexander of Wilkins Street, Friendship, East Coast Demerara.

According to the police report, the accident occurred at about 16:50 hrs and involved a motor lorry (GAD) 5905, owned by the Alabama Equipment Rental and Transportation Service driven by Sudesh Rohit, 32, of Leguan Island and Alexander who was driving a car (PKK 475].

Enquiries revealed that the lorry was proceeding in an eastern direction along the northern side of the road. Rohit alleged that Alexander, who was driving in the opposite direction, overtook another vehicle and ended up in the lorry’s path.

On seeing this, the lorry driver said he pulled to the left to avoid a collision, but the two vehicles collided despite his efforts.

Alexander suffered injuries to his head and about his body. He was in an unconscious condition when the police took him out of the car and transported him to the Diamond Diagnostic Center. There, he was seen and examined by doctors and was pronounced dead.

The man’s body was escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for storage and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Meanwhile, Rohit was given a breathalyzer test, and the results showed no trace of alcohol. He is currently in police custody assisting with the investigation.
