P&P Insurance Brokers has continued their support of sport in Guyana by coming to the aid of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU).

The Union is preparing to send a male Under-19 team to the Rugby Americas North Senior Women’s 12s and Men’s Under-19 tournament from July 14 – 17 at the University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica.

“Over the years P&P Insurance has been supporting the Guyana Rugby Football Union and this year is no different”, the Insurance Brokers expressed in a release to the media on Wednesday.

In a simple presentation at the Company’s Lamaha Street office, Director Vikash Panday made the financial presentation to Team Manager Sherlock Solomon.

GRFU’s treasurer, Troy Yhip, was also present.

Panday stressed the need for bodies of the private sector and other businesses to support tournaments such as these and fulfill their corporate social responsibility.

Recently, the Union appealed to the government and corporate Guyana for financial assistance to ensure the country is represented at major upcoming events, especially in the Sevens format.

GRFU President Ryan Dey highlighted that the Union has taken steps to spark a turnaround, appointing former national player Claudius Butts as the new Head Coach of the Men’s Sevens team and roping in former President ‘Kit’ Nascimento as the Patron of the governing body.

Additionally, former national captain Ryan Gonsalves and former executive of the GRFU Peter Champagne have come on board as advisors to the Union.

However, a significant hurdle for the current executive is the lack of financial resources to return the game to its glory days.

Guyana was a significant force in Caribbean Sevens rugby during the playing days of Butts and Gonsalves, and Dey is now hoping support can start to flow to spark a much-needed revival.
