A 29-year-old sailor is missing and feared dead following an accident in the Essequibo River on Thursday.
He has been identified as Gavin Cox of Botavia Village, Mazaruni River.
Cox was the lone occupant of the boat when it was allegedly hit by a fiberglass boat, which Mark Gonsalves was operating.
Police Headquarters confirmed the incident occurred at around 19:45hrs.
According to a Police report, Cox was traversing the Essequibo River when the fiberglass boat, powered by a 300 hp engine, collided with his vessel.
As a result of the impact, Cox was tossed overboard.
Gonsalves reportedly related to the Police that he attempted to search the area for Cox but his efforts were futile.
A search is currently underway for Cox.
However, a relative, told the News Room that up to Friday night, the search ended without Cox being located. The search is expected to resume on Saturday.
The matter was reported to the Bartica Police Station.
Police said Gonsalves was placed in custody as the investigation continues.
