Berbice man nabbed with over 120Lbs of cannabis hidden in canter

Police on Sunday arrested a Berbice man who had over 120 pounds of suspected cannabis hidden in the back of his vehicle.

According to a statement from Police Headquarters, ranks attached to the Mahaica Police Station conducted an anti-crime patrol in the vicinity of Helena 1, Public Road Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, at about 9:30hrs when the man was arrested.

The police said the man was speeding in a white motor canter bearing registration # GYY 8519, heading in the western direction.

Police stopped the vehicle and the driver, a man from New Amsterdam, Berbice, along with a woman and a toddler were inside. The police said the man didn’t have documents but he produced a firearm and handed over a license for it to the police.

The two adults and the toddler were escorted to the Mahaica Police Station, where ranks later searched the vehicle and found hollow blocks, sand and a wheelbarrow in the back of the tray.

Police further unearthed two bulky brown salt bags and two bulky transparent parcels suspected to be cannabis. The two brown salt bags and the two transparent parcels were removed in the man’s presence and police observed that one of the brown salt bags contained three transparent parcels and the other brown salt bag contained two transparent parcels which amounted to seven parcels suspected to be cannabis.

The police said they were told of the allegation, cautioned and arrested. The narcotics were weighed in their presence which amounted to 54.790 kilogrammes (which is converted to 120.7 lbs). The firearm was also lodged.
