Pedestrian killed in Mon Repos accident

A 67-year-old man is now dead after he was struck down on the Mon Repos Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Sunday night.

Dead is Muntaz Ali of Lot 37 Mon Repos North, ECD.

Police Headquarters said they are investigating the accident which occurred about 21:20hrs.

Ali lost his life after motor car PMM 9156 crashed into him while he was walking over the road.

The car driver has been identified by the Police as a 48-year-old male of Helena #1 Mahaica, ECD.

According to a Police report, the driver claimed that he was proceeding west along the southern side of the northern carriageway when he alleged that Ali walked into the path of his car.

At the time, Ali was pushing his bicycle from south to north across the road, Police said.

The driver claimed that he applied brakes and pulled north to avoid a collision but despite his effort, the right side front of his vehicle collided with Ali.

As a result, Ali fell onto the roadway.

He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

“A breathalyser test conducted on the driver read .008% BAC micrograms,” Police said.

The driver was placed in police custody as the investigation ongoing.

Police said his vehicle was also lodged to be examined by a licensing and certifying officer.
