Surinamese nabbed with ecstasy, hash jailed and fined

Days after he was apprehended, Surinamese national Virjanand Narain was on Monday sentenced to three years imprisonment and fined $688, 350 after he admitted to having a quantity of the drug ecstasy and “hash” in his possession.

Narain appeared before Magistrate Renita Singh at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and pleaded guilty possession of narcotics.

The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) had said Narain was intercepted during an operation on Saturday at Eliza Mary, Corriverton, Berbice.

He was escorted to CANU Headquarters in Berbice where the suspected narcotics was weighed and tested.

It amounted to 69 grammes of ecstasy and 101 grammes of hashish.

Hash is a drug made by compressing and processing parts of the cannabis plant.
