A man who had been arrested several times for break and enter and theft met his demise Monday night when he broke into a house on Brickdam, Georgetown.
Intruder Christopher Gonsalves, 31, who hails from Independence Boulevard, Albouystown, Georgetown was stabbed to death by the homeowner who confronted him and reportedly acted in self-defence.
Gonsalves gained entry to the house through a window and when he came face to face with the homeowner, he grabbed a knife and reportedly stabbed the man first.
A scuffle ensued, during which the homeowner managed to get the knife from Gonsalves and in turn stabbed him multiple times about his body.
The police and other emergency teams responded following a call and Gonsalves was pronounced dead at the scene.
An official statement from Police Headquarters noted that a third man was involved in the scuffle.
According to a colleague of the homeowner, he arrived at the height of the confrontation and saw Gonsalves standing over the man with a knife. He too armed himself with a knife.
Gonsalves reportedly rushed to him and a scuffle ensued during which he stabbed the victim to his upper right shoulder, lower left abdomen, and thrice to his back, causing him to collapse on the kitchen floor.
The homeowner received injuries to his upper chest, left and right index finger and right arm, while his colleague received injuries to his right knuckles. They were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by the EMT, where they are presently seeking medical attention under police guard.
Gonsalves was sentenced to eight months in jail for break and enter and larceny just last year.
He told a city magistrate that he was drunk when he walked into an apartment and stole laptops and other items.
