Female U-19 cricket: Grimmond, Isaacs lead Berbice to crushing win over Essequibo

In a match that yielded 98 extras, Berbice defeated Essequibo by eight wickets to start the Guyana Cricket Board’s Female Under-19 Inter-county T20 competition on a positive note.

Playing at the Port Mourant ground in Berbice on Thursday, the home side knocked off a target of 109 in 11.2 overs to pocket maximum points.

Sent in to bat first, Essequibo managed 108-9 from the allotted 20 overs, a total that included a staggering 61 extras (52 wides, 3 no-balls, 5 byes, 1 leg-bye).

Opener Laurene Williams was the only player to get into double-figures with 20 off 28 balls (3x4s).

National player Realeanna Grimmond was the pick of the bowlers with 3-19 off four overs, while Tia Isaacs took 2-22 off four and Crystal Durant 2-16 off three. Ashmini Munisar was economical with figures of 4-0-9-1.

Essequibo’s innings included 90 dot balls.

Grimmond then stroked an unbeaten 37 off 31 balls (4x4s, 1×6) to spur her team to victory. Grimmond and Isaacs set the platform for victory with an opening partnership of 76 in seven overs with the latter scoring 22 off 28 (4x4s).

Munisar was the other not out batter on 13 when victory was achieved. Lavina Ragobeer was the wicket-taker for Essequibo with 2-28 off three, as extras were a healthy 37 (27 wides, 6 no-balls, 3 byes, 1 leg-bye).

The competition will wrap up on Friday with Demerara taking on Essequibo from 09:30h, followed by Berbice versus Demerara from 14:00h at the same venue.
