Man gets three years jail for robbing taxi driver

A Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown resident was on Thursday sentenced to three years imprisonment for the armed robbery committed on a taxi driver along the Plaisance Line Top, East Coast Demerara on November 3, 2022.

Isaiah Johnson was sentenced by Magistrate Rushell Liverpool following a trial at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

The court heard that he robbed Junior Alphonso of one Nissan Bluebird keyless entry sensor valued at $60,000.

The matter was prosecuted by Sergeant Visram Ramjattan. The court heard that on the day in question at about 02:15 hrs, Johnson hired Alphonso and requested to be dropped off at Plaisance Line Top.

When they arrived at the destination, Johnson exited the car, pulled out a firearm from his bag, and pointed it at the victim, demanding that he hands over the car.

Johnson then pulled the victim out of the car but the victim threw away the keyless sensor which is used to unlock the car.

As Johnson went to retrieve the keyless sensor, Alphonso went back into his car and locked it. He then raised by alarm by honking the horn, which caused Johnson to run away. The entire ordeal was caught on nearby CCTV cameras.

A report was made to the Police and an investigation was launched. Johnson was later arrested, and the keyless sensor was recovered in his possession.  He was also positively identified by the victim.
