An accident on Nelson Mandela Avenue, Georgetown on Sunday night has resulted in the death of a 47-year-old Diamond, East Bank Demerara (EBD) resident.

Dead is Lakeram Etwaroo called ‘Anil’, 47, of Diamond New Housing Scheme, EBD.

The accident occurred at about 23:50 hrs.

At the time, Etwaroo was the rider of motor cycle, CH 2546.

He allegedly collided with motor lorry, GDD 3729, driven by Mohan Ram Narine, 52, of Airy Hall Public Road, Essequibo Coast.

Police Headquarters reported that Narine alleged that he was proceeding east along the southern side of Nelson Mandela Avenue and as he approached the traffic light, it was showing green in his direction but the signal to turn south was red.

As a result, he stopped and waited on the turn signal to change.

According to the Police, as Narine was in the process of turning right, Etwaroo, who was speeding west along the said road, collided into the left side rear wheel of the motor lorry.

As a result of the collision, Etwaroo fell onto the road where he received injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police said Narine was subject to a breathalyzer test, which showed he had no trace of alcohol in his breath.

Narine was taken into custody while the motorcycle and motor lorry were lodged.

    Investigations are ongoing.
