The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Monday confirmed that a soldier was shot and killed by a colleague at the Army’s Camp Stephenson base at Timehri, East Bank Demerara.
Dead is Private Tevon Daymon. The GDF said he died at about 07:45 hrs at the Diamond Hospital, East Bank Demerara.
The shooting took place at about 04:51hrs while Daymon and the other rank were performing security duties.
The GDF did not provide any details of what happened but described the shooting as “unfortunate”.
“The Guyana Police Force is investigating and the assailant is in their custody.
“This appears to be an isolated incident and does not reflect the overall discipline and professionalism of our ranks,” the Army stated.
According to the GDF, a Board of Inquiry will be convened to investigate the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of Private Daymon.
In the statement, the Chief of Staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, Officers and Ranks extended condolences to the parents and family of the late Private Daymon and the Army said it will ensure that “all necessary support is given to the family at this time.”
