A family of four from Eversham Village, Corentyne, Berbice is now homeless after their home was reduced to ashes on Tuesday.
Shondel Hopkinson, 39, a Queensway Security Service guard along with her teenaged children and husband are left to ponder their next move after losing all their belongings in a matter of minutes to an electrical fire.
Hopkinson told reporters that her children were at school and her husband was at work when she left home around 11:00 am to head to Citizens Bank in New Amsterdam.
At approximately 14:30 hrs, she received a call informing her that her house was engulfed in flames.
She is confident that the house was secured and no fire hazards were left unattended.
However, according to Hopkinson, she was informed by authorities that the fire was electrical in nature and started with a wire that was connected to the neighbour’s house.
“The person told me to come home now and when I reach police and firefighters were already there. It was completely burnt.” She said.
The security guard noted that her home was furnished with all the comforts and also had equipment such as a T-shirt printing machine among other items that were expected to be used to open a small printing shop.
All her children’s school clothing including new stuff she had bought with the “Because We Care” cash grant was also destroyed.
Still devasted from what occurred, Hopkinson said neighbours assisted her family with some clothing and a place to rest.
The woman disclosed that at this time she is willing to accept assistance from the public to rebuild soonest or even more urgent, with school supplies so that her children can attend school and complete their upcoming exams. They are students of the Central Corentyne Secondary School.
“…anybody willing to help, any organization want to help me to build back or even with the children school stuff. I left home to go and get passage for them to go to school because both of them have to write exam and I don’t want them to miss school…so I trying to help them…” The mother of two said.
