A 33-year-old man was taken into police custody Tuesday night after he was allegedly found with 17,711 grammes of cannabis hidden in his car trunk during a roadblock along the Leonora Public Road, West Coast Demerara.
According to Police Headquarters, a team of ranks headed by Assistant Commissioner Mahendra Sewnarine, acting on information received, set up a roadblock around 08:37hrs.
During the operation, police said a silver-grey car, bearing registration number HD 4784 was stopped and searched.
According to the police, a multi-coloured shopping bag which contained three black bulky plastic garbage bags, with 18 compressed parcels was found in the car trunk.
“Upon opening, a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis were found,” Police said.
The driver of the car was cautioned, arrested and escorted to the Leonora Police Station where the narcotic was weighed. It amounted to 17,711 grammes.
The driver is likely to be charged soon.
