Venezuelan woman in jail for operating a brothel to be charged with 9 counts of TIP

Thirty-nine-year-old Mayelin Cordova, a female Venezuelan national, and businesswoman of Byderabo Road, Bartica, Region Seven, who is currently serving a six-month prison sentence for operating a brothel, is to be further charged with nine counts of Trafficking in Persons.

Police Headquarters, in a statement, noted that between March 15, 2023, and April 30, 2023, Cordova trafficked nine Venezuelan women from Venezuela to Guyana and exploited them between Crusher Hill and Barakat Backdam, Cuyuni Mazaruni River, Region 7.

According to the report, the victims reported the matter to the Guyana Police Force, and members of the Trafficking in Persons Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department Headquarters conducted an investigation.

Based on the investigation, legal advice was given by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for Cordova to be charged with nine counts of Trafficking in Persons.

“The Guyana Police Force’s TIP Unit in efforts to combat Trafficking in Persons, will continue to work with other stakeholders to conduct intelligence-led operations, spot inspections, awareness, and training in every region of Guyana,” the Police release concluded.
