Competitive school football returns to Region Two after six-year hiatus

After a hiatus of six years, school football is set to make a triumphant return to Region Two.

The District Two Sports Committee, in collaboration with the representatives of eight participating schools, has announced the launch of the highly anticipated Digicel School Football Tournament in the region.

This initiative aims to revive the spirit of football within schools, and reignite the passion for a sport that has lacked competitive action in the region since 2017.

The tournament holds significant importance as it not only fosters healthy competition, but also provides a platform for young talents to showcase their skills.

The event was inaugurated in the presence of esteemed personalities, including the Chairman of the District Two Sports Committee, Sir Fenton Williams, committee members, The President of Essequibo/Pomeroon Football Association, Marvin Pearson and representatives of the participating schools.

The last time school football was played in the region, Charity Secondary emerged victorious, delivering an impressive 11-0 win over New Opportunity Corps.

This memorable victory left a lasting impression on the local football scene, creating a sense of excitement and anticipation for the revival of school football in Region Two.

The Digicel School Football Tournament is scheduled to commence in the region on July 3, 2023, with an exciting opener between Wakapau Secondary and Anna Regina Secondary, followed by Charity Secondary against 8th of May Secondary.

The tournament’s subsequent fixtures include Aurora facing Abram Zuil Secondary in game three, while Cotton Field Secondary will go head-to-head with Johanna Cecilia Secondary in game four, both scheduled for July 4, 2023.

The semi-finals are set to take place on July 5, 2023, where the winners of game one and game two will clash, and the winners of game three and game four will battle it out for a spot in the finals.

The much-anticipated championship match is slated for July 6, 2023, where the top two teams will compete for glory. (Azizi Christiani)
