Joshua Madanlall, a 33-year-old man of the #2 Village, East Canje, Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne), died on Saturday night after he was struck down by a speeding vehicle driven by an intoxicated man.

Police Headquarters said the accident occurred at about 20:40 hrs at the Little Diamond New Access Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).

Dinesh Ramsingh, a 38-year-old hire car driver of Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was driving HB 6038 south along the eastern lane of the access road EBD at a fast rate.

As the vehicle passed the new Prospect housing scheme, it was noted that the left side front portion of Ramsingh’s vehicle collided with Madanlall who was walking on the eastern edge of the same road.

Resultantly, the pedestrian pitched forward and hit his head on the right side rear of parked motorcar (#PRR 440). Madanlall sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body and was later pronounced dead.

It was, however, noted that Ramsingh did not stop and render any assistance. Police said he continued driving at a fast rate, fleeing the scene; he was apprehended by citizens in Diamond. Later, he was taken to the Little Diamond Police outpost with his vehicle.

A breathalyser test was conducted and it was found that the driver had 94 micrograms and 93 micrograms of alcohol in his system; this is above the prescribed limit of 35 micrograms.

Meanwhile, Madanlall’s body was taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for storage pending a post-mortem examination.

Investigations into the matter continue.
