Three men were caught stealing heavy duty machine parts from BK Quarries in Teperu, Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni).

The men are Kurt Benfield of Prince William Street, Plaisance; Quincy Davis of Durban Street, Georgetown; and Paul Persaud of Third Street, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

According to a release from the company, the men appeared before the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, Region Seven, on Wednesday. They were charged with simple larceny. The men pleaded guilty and were each fined $50,000 with an alternative of six months’ imprisonment.

It was noted that the theft of equipment had been going on for years. Recently, however, a security guard at the quarry noticed the men acting suspiciously. The guard reportedly approached them and questioned their actions.

Afterwards, the guard alerted his supervisor but the men quickly disappeared.

The guard was, however, able to identify them and the men were apprehended. They eventually took a security team to the waterfront where they had hidden the stolen items. The items were estimated to cost about $200,000.

A further search found other articles that had been stolen and hidden in a boat at the waterfront. The men were taken to the Bartica Police Station, where they reportedly confessed that they had been stealing for years.
