A total of 102 persons lost their lives for the year so far after they were involved in accidents and incidents on the country’s roadways.
This is according to recent statistics provided by the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
The deaths recorded are from January 1 to June 29, 2023.
According to the Police, this period saw a total of 65 fatal accidents which resulted in 75 deaths; there were 24 fatal incidents which claimed the lives of 27 persons.
In February this year, Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn had announced that there has been a 100 per cent increase in the number of fatal accidents recorded between the periods of January 1, 2023 to February 18, 2023, when compared to the same period in 2022.
Benn highlighted that the authorities were able to reduce road deaths by 30 per cent in 2021 and 2022, with less than 100 persons killed for the first time in 16 years.
