The governing People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) plans to develop a home improvement programme that will benefit over 252 households along Laing Avenue and Yarrow Dam in Georgetown.

The party’s General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo Monday said some $50 million was set aside for housing development in this section of Georgetown. It is part of the governing party’s commitment prior to the June 12 Local Government Elections (LGE).

Minister of Labour Joseph Hamilton, Minister with responsibility for Public Affairs, Kwame McCoy and the Director of the Guyana Online Academy of Learning, Dr Jacob Opadeyi accompanied Dr. Jagdeo at Monday’s outreach.

In his address, Dr. Jagdeo said in the coming weeks residents can look forward to benefiting from the allocated budget to develop the area.

“I promised them [residents] that I wanted to start a home improvement programme and we set aside $50 million for the programme.

“We want to ensure that everybody could benefit from it and we want to include everyone and encourage everyone to keep working. It might not be a lot of money for everyone but it might be for little things like painting up the place,” the General Secretary said.

He explained that the area will be transformed with more beautification projects. He added that South Georgetown is deemed to undergo similar developments.

Dr. Jagdeo used the occasion to introduce some of the party’s new council members who are responsible for Georgetown to the residents.

According to the General Secretary, these are the persons who will be working with the residents to ensure that they have access to the programmes that are underway.

“We want to see development in all parts of the city, it happened in north Georgetown, now its shifting to south Georgetown and many, many roads and boulevards and hotels and buildings will be done in south Georgetown too,” Dr. Jagdeo said.
