The curtains came down on the Guinness National Squash Championships on Saturday evening with the seasoned campaigners Nicolette Fernandes and Alex Arjoon battling to secure more national titles.
Fernandes dethroned Ashely Khalil, current Caribbean Champion, to win 11-5, 11-4, and 11-4, as it was the first case of a Teacher still schooling the student at the Georgetown Club Courts.
Likewise, Arjoon pulled it back against the talented Shomari Wiltshire to win his eight senior national title.
In game one, Wiltshire was within one point of victory, but Arjoon up his ante with some cheeky plays and took the game 12-10, followed by 11-4 and 11-8.
In the third-place playoff, Jason-Ray Khalil defeated Samuel Ince-Carvalhal 11-8, 11-7 and Mary Fung-A-Fat topped Taylor Fernandes-Henry 11-7, 11-6 and 11-9.
Regan Pollard won the men’s over-40, defeating Jerazeno Bell 11-5, 3-11, 11-5, 11-9, while Joseph Mekdeci won the Men’s Over-50 (11-9, 11-6, 11-4) against Brian Yong and Lydia Fraser copped the Women’s veterans title.
All the champions were gifted new phones with unlimited data compliments of Guyana’s fastest network, ENet, while the title sponsors offered to assist further in growing the sport.
Attention will turn to the Caribbean Area Squash Association Junior Championships in St. Vincent from July 14, where Guyana will seek to defend its overall title.
