A fire of unknown origin on Thursday destroyed the majority of the building that housed El Dorado Trading at Lot 63 DaSilva Street, Newtown, Georgetown.

The wooden and concrete two-storey structure housed one of Guyana’s largest gold dealerships.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Tamesh Jagmohan, he received a telephone call alerting him of the fire at about 17:31 hrs.

He said the building was locked up after operations were concluded for the day.

Notably, the person living behind the building also wasn’t at home.

At about 18:00 hrs when the News Room arrived at the scene, members of the Guyana Fire Service were actively working to extinguish the fire. It was already under control by this time.

Jagmohan said he is pleased with the response of the Fire Service as it managed to quell the flames before it spread to nearby buildings.
